Concert Pitch Reference & Tuning Drone
Sustaining Concert B♭4 · Trumpet plays C5 (Open 0)
Listen for the acoustic "beats" (pulsing interference) when you play your note against this drone. As you adjust your lip embouchure and slide position closer to center, the beats slow down and vanish into a seamless, ringing chord.
If your trumpet pitch is sharp (pulsing fast above the drone), pull your main tuning slide out to lengthen the horn. If you are flat, push the slide in.
Warm Up Before Tuning
Brass instruments warm up as your breath raises internal tube temperatures, naturally causing the horn to play sharper. Always play 5–10 minutes of gentle long tones and lip slurs before adjusting your main tuning slide.
Concert B♭ vs Concert A
Wind bands and jazz ensembles tune to Concert B♭ (your written C5, open valves). Symphony orchestras tune to the oboe’s Concert A (your written B4, valve 2). Our drone switches instantly between both standards.
The 3rd Valve Slide Rule
Your main tuning slide only sets general horn pitch. Individual valve combinations like1-3 (Low D4) and 1-2-3 (Low C♯4) remain inherently 15–30 cents sharp due to brass physics. Kick your 3rd slide out whenever our chart flags a yellow sharp warning!
