REVERSE VALVE LOOKUP

Understanding Overtone Slots

Every valve depression reroutes your air column through precision-cut brass tubing slides: Valve 2 adds roughly 6% more tubing length (1 semitone), Valve 1 adds ~12.2% (2 semitones), and Valve 3 adds ~18.9% (3 semitones). Using the Valve → Note toggle above lets you visualize every harmonic partial available on a single valve combination—ideal for designing lip-slur flexibility drills (such as Schlossberg, Irons, and Bai-Lin exercises).

ACOUSTIC TEMPERAMENT

Why 5th-Partial Notes Sit Flat

In natural brass physics, the 5th harmonic partial sits approximately 14 cents flatter than modern 12-tone equal temperament. On a trumpet, written E5 (0), D♯5/E♭5 (2), D5 (1), and C♯5/D♭5 (1-2) all live on this 5th partial. In exposed orchestral chords, testing 6th-partial alternates like 1-2 for E5 or 2-3 for E♭5 can immediately lock your section intonation.

Concert to B♭ Trumpet

Always transpose UP one whole step (Major 2nd) and add 2 sharps (or subtract 2 flats). For example: Concert B♭ becomes Trumpet C (Open).

Reading Piano or Flute Scores

When sightreading directly from a C score or hymn, imagine every note shifted up one line or space on the staff, adding two sharps to the key signature.

Band Director Pitch Callouts

When your conductor asks the band to tune to “Concert B♭”, play your written C. For “Concert F”, play your written G.
