Above-the-Staff Fingering & Partial Matrix

Written High NoteConcert Pitch (B♭)Primary ValvesLead AlternatesHarmonic PartialAir & Embouchure Slot Cue
G5F5 (698.46 Hz)0 (Open)#6Gateway to the upper register — think forward across the room, never "up".
G♯5 / A♭5G♭5 (739.99 Hz)2 - 3#6Notice how partials sit closer together above G5 — hear the pitch before attacking!
A5G5 (783.99 Hz)1 - 2#6High tongue dorsal arch ("Hiss" air compression) unlocks High A without pressing.
A♯5 / B♭5A♭5 (830.61 Hz)1#8Fast, narrow air jet aimed cleanly at the mouthpiece throat.
B5A5 (880 Hz)2#8Maintain bottom-lip cushion; let compressed air do 90% of the work.
C6B♭5 (932.33 Hz)0 (Open)#8Milestone High C! Fast cool laser air + firm corners, zero mouthpiece crush.
C♯6 / D♭6B5 (987.77 Hz)1 - 2#9Above High C, adjacent partials are whole steps/half steps apart — ear leads first!
D6C6 (1046.5 Hz)1#9Keep throat relaxed and tongue arched high ("Tee" articulation).
D♯6 / E♭6D♭6 (1108.73 Hz)2#9Focused abdominal wedge support; keep shoulders down and relaxed.
E6D6 (1174.66 Hz)0 (Open)#1010th partial High E: visualize whistling a pure high pitch into the leadpipe.
F6E♭6 (1244.51 Hz)1#11Commercial/Lead High F — micro-aperture + maximum air velocity.
F♯6 / G♭6E6 (1318.51 Hz)2#12Maintain steady air support right through the release of the note.
G6F6 (1396.91 Hz)0 (Open)#12Double High G! Never muscle it — build gradually via octave glissandos and rest.
01 · AIR VELOCITY OVER PRESSURE

Stop Crushing the Mouthpiece

Pressing the rim harder against your upper lip cuts off capillary blood flow and Pinches the vibration shut. Instead, keep mouthpiece contact light while raising the dorsal arch of your tongue ("Hiss" / "Tee" syllable) to accelerate air velocity—just like placing your thumb partially over a garden hose nozzle.

02 · CLOSER PARTIAL SPACING

Why Accuracy Needs Your Ear

Between Low C4 and G4, partials sit a Perfect 5th apart. Above High C6 (8th partial), adjacent partials sit only a whole step—and then a half step—apart! Always sing or hear the target pitch internally before articulating so your air locks into the right harmonic.

03 · ALTERNATE HIGH D6 & E6

Lead Trumpet Security Slots

On High D6, try both standard 1 and open 0 (the 9th harmonic of the open horn)—many lead players find Open High D rings with thrilling brilliance. Similarly, test 2 vs 1-2 on High C♯6.
